Ballinteer Church Roof Reconstruction

The reconstruction of the church roof at Ballinteer Church is due to start on Monday 16th May. Masses will continue at the church on weekdays in the oratory and on Saturday night/Sunday in a restricted area in the church.

The work will take seven months and will cost Euro 1,800,000 as not only has the roof to be recovered at high and low levels but the dome and the glass panels over the altar have to be replaced, the church has to be rewired and the water tanks replaced. The roof of the two presbyteries must also be attended to. Experts tell us that long lasting materials were not used 33 years ago and we now pay the penalty. We have Euro800,000 in hand due to the sale of the parochial house and a piece of land for accommodation for the elderly. We must raise Euro 1,000,000 over the next ten years.

We have already launched the Roof Fund and Euro 3,300 was collected the first Sunday. We hope to continue with two after Mass collections per month for the next six months. We have envelopes available for those who wish to make more substantial donations. The monthly repayments from August should be Euro 10,025. We don’t have this money and in the interim the parish will have to provide Euro 5,000 per month and the Diocesan agency Share will contribute the balance of Euro 5,000. This situation will last until a full revamp can take place of the family offerings scheme in late 2006.

We appeal to your generosity, that generosity you showed over the past 33 years. For your convenience on Page 3 we are enclosing a standing order form and request for envelopes.

Golden Jubilee of Ordination of Fr. Jim O’Sullivan

6 p.m. Mass, Saturday, 14th May 2005

Fr. Jim O’Sullivan will be celebrating the Golden Jubilee of his ordination to the priesthood on Saturday 14 May 2005 at the 6 p.m. Mass in Ballinteer Church and Bishop Martin Drennan will preside.

All are welcome to the celebration and tea and sandwiches afterwards in the School Hall. Fr. Jim has served in Ballinteer Parish since 1996 and has been a great source of encouragement to so many people during his years here.

Fr. Jim has served in a number of parishes in the Diocese beginning with chaplaincies at Carriglea and Bakers Cross. A chaplaincy followed at Loreto Dalkey before he was appointed an assistant in Glasnevin. His first curacy was at Kilcullen, Co. Kildare, followed by Wicklow Town and Clondalkin.

Fr. Jim was appointed as Parish Priest to develop a new area at Bawnogue, Clondalkin, where he built a church, schools and presbyteries. In 1985 he was appointed Parish Priest of Balbriggan, Co. Dublin, where he served until he stepped down to become a curate at Ballinteer in 1996.

We thank Fr. Jim for his many years of dedicated work for the Lord and wish him very many more happy years of Ministry.

Everyone is very welcome and we hope that you can attend to celebrate with Fr. Jim.

Spiritual Exercises in Daily Living

The Spiritual Exercises go back to St. Ignatius of Loyola, the founder of the Jesuits, who lived in the 16th Century. They offer a method of prayer that allows the participant to follow Jesus and seek God’s will as life experiences unfold. Made in ‘Daily Living’, that is while continuing with normal every day activities, the Exercises involve prayer each day and a weekly meeting with a Spiritual Guide; they last about 30 weeks. Further information from Fr. Jim O’Sullivan at 4944163.

Change of Pope

Since our Easter Edition of the Newsletter we have seen our beloved Pope John Paul II pass to his eternal reward. The esteem in which he was held was marked by the big attendances at Masses over the period of his final illness and on his death.

The sorrow experienced by all gave way to great joy on the occasion of the election of Cardinal Ratzinger as the new Pope. All our prayers and good wishes are with Pope Benedict XVI as he takes on the onerous task of leading the church at this time.
