EASTER 2004

Lumen Christi - Deo Gratias. The light of Christ - thanks be to God. These are the words spoken or sung at the beginning of the Easter Vigil as the priest or deacon holds the Paschal candle high and publicly proclaims that light has overcome darkness in the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead. At the end of March, summer time officially begins and we look forward to longer evenings. For many people, the fact that there is more light is enormously helpful and causes people to become more hopeful and optimistic. Light is necessary for growth and it is a commodity that can be in short supply in our contemporary society. Our newspapers and television screens are filled with darkness as they continue to bombard us with bad news of one kind or another. And let us be very honest about it, they do succeed in making some people feel lost, vulnerable and unsure about the future. For us Christians, the message of Easter is that Christ, the light of the world has overcome the darkness, and the dark forces will never prevail over Him and His kingdom. We then are filled with hope because we know that in Christ all will be renewed and redeemed.

Another line from the Easter liturgy comes to mind. On Easter Day, the Sequence may be read after the second reading and it contains a wonderful line: 'mors et vita duello', literally between life and death there was a duel and we know that Christ won that duel in that the forces of darkness, evil and negativity have been overcome for all time and can never regain the upper hand. So, a little like the daffodils that- are being tossed about in a strong wind outside my window as I write, but that refuse to be destroyed and seem to bounce back even more beautiful after the storm, so it is with us. Life can be difficult, cruel, brutal, uncaring BUT we are always accompanied on our journey by the risen Christ who never deserts us or abandons us. If we put our trust in Him and in His love for each one of us, then a little like the daffodils, we will be able to prosper and bounce back despite what the world does to us.

Perhaps it is good that we remember to communicate the joy of Easter to those around us so that we will be part of the process of bringing light to a darkened world. Christ cannot proclaim His message of hope and joy without our assistance, and the best assistance that we can render is the practical loving of our neighbour whoever that person may be. 'See how these Christians love one another' was a saying of the early church. We proclaim our belief in the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead not by what we say, but by what we do. So let us use these days of light and hope to demonstrate to the world that our faith is not in vain but is alive and filled with power.

A final thought. For me, THE great Easter prayer is the Glory be to the Father etc. Two words stand out: 'is now'. The prayer reminds us that, just as God was powerfully active at the beginning of time and will be active at the end, so is God powerfully active NOW in His world constantly re-creating and re-newing. The 'is now'-ness of God is what we celebrate at Easter. We proclaim our belief that God is always present and always at work, and we recommit ourselves to totally placing our trust in Him. Wouldn't it be marvellous if we made it our business to attend all three parts of the one Easter ceremony, Holy Thursday, Good Friday and the Easter Vigil so that once again, we might hear the good news of what God has done for us. There is only one good news - that good news is our faith in Jesus Christ who is risen as He promised.

Seeking Help from Sacred Scripture

‘Ask the Lord to bless your plans and you will be successful in carrying them out’ Proverbs 16 : 3.

If we use this scripture and communicate in a real way with the Lord we will receive guidance and help coping with all the issues in our lives. As we celebrate the feast of St. Patrick we are aware of how precious the gift of our faith is. St. Patrick experienced God's love in his heart and he wanted this gift for all of us.

In prayer we can share with the Lord all our feelings, our hopes and our plans. As we learn to 'hand all the issues in our lives over to the Lord', we will experience peace of mind and be better able to cope. When we ask for help in prayer we should always remember to end our prayer with praise and thanksgiving to our ever loving, never changing God.

Prayer to St. Joseph for Protection

Oh, St. Joseph, whose protection is so great, so strong, so prompt before the throne of God, I place in you all my interest and desires. Oh, St. Joseph, do assist me by your powerful intercession, and obtain for me from your divine Son all spiritual blessings, through Jesus Christ, our Lord. So that, having engaged here below your heavenly power, I may offer my thanksgivings and homage to the most loving of Fathers.

Oh, St. Joseph, I never weary contemplating you, and Jesus asleep in your arms; I dare not approach while He reposes near your heart. Press Him in my name and kiss His fine head for me and ask Him to return the Kiss when I draw my dying breath. St. Joseph, Patron of departing souls — Pray for me.
