Golden Jubilee of John Canon Battelle, P.P.

On Saturday, 20th May, the Church was full for the celebration of Mass at 6 p.m. to mark the Golden Jubilee of the Ordination of Fr. Battelle. Long before the Mass began all of the Mass leaflets had been distributed. The Mass was concelebrated by His Grace Archbishop Diarmuid Martin assisted by Fathers Jim O¹Sullivan, Mattie O¹Farrell and Dan O¹Connor. In the opening procession items marking Fr. Battelle¹s life as a priest were brought to the altar. The Parish Choirs were in splendid voice and members of the congregation are still talking about the beautiful Hymn of Praise to the Lord - the Te Deum. Even the Archbishop was impressed! Everyone who took part - readers, altar servers, Ministers of the Eucharist, Collectors, etc did a splendid job - not forgetting those who cleaned and prepared the church so well for the occasion.

The rousing reception given to Fr. Battelle demonstrated the regard with which he and Fathers Jim and Mattie are held in the Parish. Again, the Archbishop was most impressed! The ceremony ended with the Archbishop conferring the title ³Canon² on Father Battelle, who was most surprised.

As we trooped off to the School Hall to sample the sandwiches, cakes and tea we now had cause for a double celebration. As the Canon and the Archbishop cut the giant cake Fr. Mattie sang "For he is a jolly good fellow". Canon Battelle wishes to thank all the parishioners and friends who turned out for the occasion, those who prepared the Church and School and who worked so hard to ensure his Happy Day.

It was a great joy for Canon Battelle¹s family to see how popular he is among his parishioners. We wish him many years of health, happiness and peace.

New Parish Priest

The Archbishop of Dublin, Dr. Diarmuid Martin, has appointed the Very Rev. Richard Behan as our new Parish Priest to succeed Canon Battelle. He will be coming to us from the Parish of St. Peter¹s, Little Bray. He is a native of nearby Firhouse.

What is a Canon?

The assignment of the title Canon on Fr. Battelle is a great honour for the Parish and personally for Father Battelle. Canons are members of the Chapter of the Diocese and meet on a number of occasions each year. Canon Battelle attended his first such meeting on Friday, 2nd June, which was also attended by Archbishop Martin.

Ballinteer Parish Cell Community

Our parish is one of many in Ireland (North and South), U.K. and worldwide where Cell Communities come together in small Ohome¹ groups once a fortnight for a time of prayer and praise. We strive to live the Christian life with the help and support of each other. Cell meetings are happening in our Parish for the last fifteen years. There can never be too much prayer and it is now widely recognised that parish communities benefit greatly from dedicated prayer efforts. Cell Community is an open forum where all are welcomed. If you are new in our parish or would like to "Come and See" a Cell meeting please call 01 4953182 now.

Our recent Cedar Meal celebration in Ballinteer, the Cell Community Workshop in Milan and our National Seminar in Callan, Co. Kilkenny on 2/3/4 June have all been spiritually inspiring, uplifting and challenging, as well as very enjoyable.

Parish Pilgrimage to Holy Land

43 of us set out on Tuesday 25th April with organiser Tom Ryan and spiritual director Canon Batttelle. Bethlehem was our base for the first 5 nights. From here we visited the holy places in the Bethlehem/ Jerusalem area and Jericho and the Dead Sea. On Monday we moved 200 km north to Tiberias on the Sea of Galilee and visited Nazareth and the other locations of Jesus¹ Galilean ministry. On Thursday we visited Mount Carmel in Haifa and Caesarea (Roman aqueduct) before flying from Tel Aviv early on Friday 5th May. Each day Canon Battelle celebrated Mass with us and we remembered all at home, especially the sick. It was a faith-affirming experience and very enjoyable holiday combined.

Church Roof Fund

The amount collected in the twice monthly Church door collections stands at E73,500 approx.

Spiritual Exercises in Daily Living

Just as physical exercises are good for bodily health, so spiritual exercises are good for increasing openness to the movement of the Holy Spirit¹ so wrote St. Ignatius of Loyola who suggests material and describes ways of praying centred on the Gospels.

Made in "Daily Life", that is while continuing with normal daily activities, the exercises involve prayer each day and a weekly meeting with a Spiritual Guide for some 30 weeks. There are no set times for starting or finishing exercises. However, a September start enables Nativity scenes to be prayed at Christmas with the Passion in Lent and the Resurrection at Easter.

Fr Jim O¹Sullivan (4944163) will be glad to talk to anyone looking for further information or wondering if the Exercises are right for them at this time. Early contact gives time for talking things over before committing oneself.

Fr Jim is also available for spiritual chats, prayer guidance, etc.

Pilgrimage to Lourdes

2nd to 7th October 2006 (Feast of the Holy Rosary). 5 Nights (Full Board) at Hotel Jean D¹Arc.

Price E650 (includes taxes, insurance and bus transfer from Ballinteer).

Pilgrimage organiser: Aidan Leonard: Tel:2982020

Planned Giving Envelopes

If you have not received a box for the current year commenced 1st May, please give your name and address to one of the Priests or Sacristan, who will arrange to have a box sent to you.

Week of Guided Prayer September 17-22

This is an opportunity to make a short retreat while continuing with normal daily activities. It involves praying at home with a Gospel passage and a 1/2 hour one-to-one meeting with a trained Prayer Guide from Monday to Friday, somewhere between 7.30 and 9.00 p.m.

Fr. Jim O¹Sullivan (4944163) will be glad to talk to anyone looking for further information. Early enquiries not only make sure of a place but help greatly in engaging Prayer Guides.

Feast of the Sacred Heart, Friday 23rd June, 2006

Sunday 18th June marks the great feast of Corpus Christi. In 1673 the Lord appeared to St. Margaret Mary and asked that a feast dedicated to his Sacred Heart be celebrated as a solemn act of reparation for sins committed against the Eucharist.

This year marks the 150th anniversary of the extension of the Feast to the Universal Church.

To mark this special year the Jesuits at Paray-le-Monial have made available the relics of St. Claude La Colombiere, to whom St. Margaret Mary confided the request, for veneration in Ireland. They will be available for veneration in different locations in all four provinces until 21st July, 2006 and should be in Dublin on 19th and 20th July.

Did you know that there are upwards of 300 religious congregations using the term "Sacred Heart" in their title.

Jesus promised St. Margaret Mary that he would "bless those homes in which the image of my Sacred Heart shall be exposed and honoured".
