Our Lenten Journey 2004

At the beginning of his public life Jesus proclaimed the kingdom of God. He said ‘The time has come. The Kingdom of God is at hand. Repent and believe the good news.’ On Ash Wednesday this was brought up to date for us ‘now is the favourable time, this is the day of salvation’. Quoting the words of the prophet Joel the Church adds solemnity to the call ‘sound the trumpet, order a fast, call the people together, summon the community. It is the Lord who speaks ‘come back to me with all your heart,’ The message is clear. We have entered a period of Preparation for Easter. We are called to renewal, to a new beginning. For adults to be baptised at Easter, it is a time of final preparation. For us it is a reminder that the road of Christian initiation lasts a life-time, the call to repentance and faith ends only with death. At Easter we are called to return to our baptism, to renew our profession of faith and our life-commitment to living in God's way. By receiving the ashes on Ash Wednesday we begin our Forty-day journey toward Easter. Notice that we make this start during a community celebration of Mass making clear that we travel not just as individuals but also as members of the pilgrim people of God supporting and encouraging each other as we go. The words used in the distribution of the ashes are worth returning to as the days pass: turn away from sin and be faithful to the gospel; remember you are dust and to dust you will return.

As you may know Pope John Paul has recently added a new set of mysteries to the Rosary. Each is a significant moment in the life of Jesus on earth. The third of these, Mysteries of Light, is Jesus proclamation of the kingdom of God, his call to conversion and invitation ‘come, follow me’. This call is universal in that it goes out to all people; yet he calls each person in a particular and unique way. He makes this kind of appeal: ‘it is my will to win over the whole world, to overcome evil with good, to turn hatred aside with love, to conquer all the forces of death — what ever obstacles there are that block the sharing of life between God and human kind. Whoever wishes to join me in this mission must be willing to labour with me so that by following me in suffering they may share with me in glory’. Jesus also invites us to reject the standards of evil set before us ‘by the world, the flesh and the devil’ and to enrol under his standard of justice and truth, of love and of peace. (‘Kingdom’ and ‘Two Standards’ meditations of St Ignatius Loyola adapted.)

A Lenten Preface sets the tone. ‘This great season of grace is your gift to your family to renew us in spirit. You give us strength to purify our hearts, to control our desires and so to serve you in freedom. You teach us how to live in this world with our hearts set on the world that will never end’. May the way we live Lent lead others to say ‘see how they know that God loves them’.

Seeking Help from Sacred Scripture

‘Ask and you will receive; seek, and you will find; knock, and the door will be opened to you.’ Matthew 7 7 : 8.

For this prayer to be really effective we need to make a commitment to live our lives in communication with the Lord. One way of doing this is to make a conscious effort to start each day with a prayer. It is very comforting to realize that our first thought is a prayer thanking God for the gift of today and for the grace to live life in a way pleasing to Him.

We can then turn to Him in all our needs and expect to receive his help with whatever crops up during the day. The ‘Partnership’ pamphlet suggests a prayer such as ‘Dear Lord, I don’t feel able to get through this day by myself. I know you can enable me to do it. Please do. I place my life in your care just for today. I am available to you Lord; please take care of me’.

When we talk to the Lord in this way we can share our concerns with Him and offer them up in prayer and expect to experience His peace.
