An Easter Meditation
Baptism figures large in our Easter liturgy. During the Easter Vigil on Holy Saturday is the ideal time for baptism. We are reminded that in baptism we died with Christ to the old life of sin and rose with him to a new life of grace (Romans 6, 3). We renew our baptismal promises and restate our commitment to stand with Christ and to be motivated with his values in our daily lives. We remind ourselves that we stand for all that is right and good, just and true; we are people of peace, forgiveness and reconciliation. In a word, we put God first and love and appreciate ourselves and others as God’s ‘work of art’.
As followers of Christ we are challenged to spread his message in today’s world. ‘By this all will know that you are my disciples - that you love one another as I have loved you’ (John 13, 34-5). What is in question is self-sacrificing, self-giving love after the example of Christ himself, ‘tough’ love, if you like, the kind that takes difficult, principled decisions when necessary and makes sacrifices as required; the kind that is steadfast and faithful in good times and in bad. Pope Benedict is reported to have told the newly created cardinals to ‘see to it that the Church’s solicitude for the poor and needy challenges the world with a powerful statement on the civilising power of love’. We, too, might take these words to heart and allow them to influence our thinking and our attitudes toward those in our society who may be underprivileged, neglected, unloved and marginalised, rather than ‘cherished’ equally as befits God’s beloved sons and daughters.
Golden Jubilee of Fr. Battelle, P.P.
At the 6 p.m. Mass on Saturday, 20th May, 2006,
our beloved Parish Priest, Father Battelle, will celebrate the Golden Jubilee of his Ordination.
Congratulations Father. Ad multos annos!
Fr. Battelle came to Ballinteer fourteen years ago next June. Since then he has not spared himself in the service of the parish and parishioners
. Since 1998 Fr. Battelle has arranged for Fr. Tom Hogan and his team in Marianella to come and
give Missions, Novenas and more recently a Triduum. Fr. Battelle has led groups on pilgrimages
to the Holy Land, Poland and Prague, Shrines of France, Italy and Fatima. He has a special
fondness for Lourdes. Whether it be wet, cold or fine, Fr. Battelle is out on Sunday mornings
with a friendly smile to greet the parishioners. For those who are ill or bereaved he has a
special word. Of course, Fr. Battelle is also well known for his devotions to Saint Padre Pio
and Our Lady.
As well as looking after his flock’s spiritual needs, Fr. Battelle has ensured
that the physical resources of the Church, Schools, Presbyteries and grounds are kept in
immaculate condition. As he prepares for retirement, Fr. Battelle can be sure that he has done
more than could be expected of any man. He has attended to the smallest detail of the Parish’s
needs.
The Archbishop, Most Reverend Dr Diarmuid Martin, is expected to attend the Golden
Jubilee Mass. Everyone is welcome to attend and there will be tea and refreshments in the school
hall. Come along and show your appreciation.

hosted house meetings in the lead up to the very successful Triduum, those who attended the
house meetings and the Triduum sessions in the Church. Thanks also to Fr. Tom Hogan.

Thanks also to those who attended the Lenten Talks in the Oratory each Wednesday
night. A special thanks to Fr. John Byrne and Fr. Kieran O’Mahony of the Augustinian Fathers and
Dr. Bernadette Toal who gave the talks.
Spiritual Exercises in Daily Living
Their author, St Ignatius of Loyola, wrote ‘just as
physical exercises are good for bodily health so spiritual exercises are good for increasing
openness to the movement of the Holy Spirit, for helping to bring to light the darkness of
sinfulness and sinful tendencies within ourselves and for strengthening and supporting us in our
effort to respond ever more faithfully to the love of God’. Ignatius suggests material and
describes ways of praying centred largely on the Gospels. Made in ‘Daily Living’, that is while
continuing with normal every day activities, the Exercises involve prayer each day and a weekly
meeting with a Spiritual Guide. They last for about 30 Weeks. A long haul, perhaps, but well
worth the effort!
Fr Jim O’Sullivan (4944163) will be glad to talk to anyone looking for
further information or wondering if the Exercises are right for them at this time.
He is also available for spiritual chats, prayer guidance, one to one retreats etc. It is hoped to
have a Week of Guided Prayer in September - probably Sunday 17th to Friday 22nd.
